Revisiting the Sony a5100 in 2023 - Nice but Frustrating

This was the first camera that I actually bought. I bought it back in 2016 when I first came to Japan with the goal to be a J-Vlogger. After losing interest in that, I wanted to learn how to actually use the camera...and then I gave up with that too because I just couldn't understand it. Now in 2023, I gave it another shot since I actually understand the basics of photography and how to use var...

Guy thinks a camera from 2017 qualifies as an older camera.
Make sure you have the (SCP) turned on. “Super Control Panel.” Then when you press the OK button you will see every setting on the LCD screen. Plus you can change the settings right there. So quickly. Press OK again and you’ll cycle back to the Live Control View. > download manual. Free.
One of the good Lumix G3 reviews out there
For video you also need ptool, with ptool you can customize the latest firmware to get better compression and much higher bitrate. You can also try interlaced 60fps with it. It also has features for better audio (bitrate and AGC)
Consider me subscribing to your channel 👍👍👍 I like cameras myself and enjoy how u take the time to talk about yours 👍👍😎great work keep it up
Thank you very much! I'm just an amateur giving my thoughts on stuff, hoping to have others do the same. It's a good way for me to learn more!
Super great review! Thank you!
Looks fun! Is the Q the same as the Q-S1?
I believe the Q-S1 is an updated version of the Q.
@@imseeno makes sense. Thanks. 🙏
Thanks, I see them for under $200
A few comments. Did you know that Olympus makes an external mike adapter for your E-PL3? They are hard to find, but combined with the IBIS, the E-PL3 is a pretty awesome video camera. You really need a stablized lens to shoot videos well on the G3. I think that the G3 is too big and bulky for what it is. Finally, I make 40 x 30 inch prints regularly from Micro Four Thirds without any problems. They are just beautiful. So don't put the sensor size down by saying it is only good for social media photographs. That is simply untrue and is just based on your own pre-conceived ideas but not fact at all!!
Very interesting! Thank you for all the new information.
If you thinks it's bulky, you probably need a safe space 😂. You must be fun at parties
@@unbroken1010 What kind of inbred dumbass logic is that?
Hey just wondering how did you transfer all your pictures to your phone or laptop? Do they have wireless connection to transfer? Im trying to figure out if there are wireless connection?
I just transferred them all to my computer using a memory card reader. Then to transfer to my phone, I uploaded to my Google drive and then used the app to save to my phone. I have heard of people using memory cards with wireless capabilities for easier transfers directly to a phone, but I have yet to try that myself.
I want to know about Japanese Junior and Senior High School. I’m foreigner living in Japan 🇯🇵
What do you want to know? I can't answer about senior high school because I haven't worked at one. But any questions you have about junior high school, I can try to answer.
@@imseeno Do I need to take Junior High School entrance exam? And without knowing Japanese that much I can study? Does the Teachers know English?
Sorry for the late reply. I didn't see a notification. I think you have to take an entrance exam if you go to a private junior high school. But for a junior high like the one I work at, it's just based on the area you live in, you will go to that school. If your Japanese isn't very good, I think you'd have a difficult time because they will always be taught in Japanese. The teachers who teach English can help you but their actual English skill levels vary depending on the person. If you end up going to an international junior high school, I believe some of those schools teach in English so you shouldn't have as much of a language barrier there. Good luck with your education!
I have an E-PL1 for my daily carry. Great little camera, but it only has a fixed screen. I like using it with the manual focus 25mm f/2 from ttartisan.
does it have english menus?
Yes. You can change between different languages in the settings.
how can i connect this camera to obs
I'm not sure myself so I tried looking for answers. To connect a Lumix camera as a webcam, it either has to be one of the specific newer Lumix models or you must use some kind of capture card and other connections. But I can't confirm this myself since I no longer have the camera and this is beyond my knowledge. Sorry I can't be of help.
Thanks. I was trying to decide if I want to upgrade my micro. I bought my G3 new in 2012. I now have a full frame Lumix. But I love how lightweight these 4/3 cameras are for just carrying everywhere. My iPhone has been perfect for what I do. Which is just basic documenting day to day. I guess it's time to hand my G3 down to my son.
Micro 4/3
You got a real bargain. It is difficult to find the camera and the prime lens for under $150.
Hello! My x-a3 selfie mode is in upside down :(
From what I found online, maybe your screen isn't flipped all the way or you didn't pull the screen up when it's in selfie mode. If that doesn't fix it, some say to reset your settings.
Great video man! I have been looking for a camera that is easy to take on the go, ill have to check these out. Keep creating the videos that you want to make dude! Your style is you and your photos are great, looking forward to more content in the future!
Hey man! Just discovered your channel today through your old review of the Olympus EPL3, really like your simple and cozy style. Noticed that there's a lot of time between your videos, hope you get back in the rhythm since I'm really enjoying your style so far. I'm a beginner hobbyist and own a Konica C35V film camera, and just today I ordered a Sony NEX 5N. Keep it up! Edit: oh my god I'm so sorry, I just reached the end of the video. Definitely keep the fun in making youtube videos, and I'm sure you'll regain it. I for one, am a big fan of your style of videos, and you take stunning photos. And if I like your videos, I gurantee you there are so many more people that also will.
Thank you for watching and thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it. BTW, how are you liking the film camera? I've been itching to shoot film again but it just has been too expensive recently. I'd love to see what you've shot with it.
@@imseeno i love the process, the photos are pretty bad(for now). first roll was a party (some fujifilm 400, i dont remember which one), which are fun photos but all blurry. second roll (wolfen 500) is street photography, and I shot it at f/8, and the thing is that this camera chooses the shutter speed according to the f-stop you use, so i believe it was a slow-ish shutter speed. combine slow shutter speed with a nervous, anxious beginner street photographer, and most of the photos are blurred because of shaky hands or being afraid that the subject will stare into one's soul(therefore rushing to take the shot). I love the process nonetheless
The honestly how you put it in the end my friend 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 this is my 2nd video I've checked on your channel .... Patience is key do what you love to do ... Stay happy with it .... And you will continue to improve and or get more ideas from your past videos
Good deal.
Decent review. Maybe a stabilized lens and a selfie stick would make the video more useable. How was the autofocus? What about battery life? I’m thinking this would make a good backup for my EM1mkii.
I thought the autofocus was reliable. I can't comment though on how reliable it is on fast moving subjects since I haven't tried it. As for the battery, it went to about half way after about 3 hours of just walking around and taking test photos and videos (turned off when I knew I wasn't going to use it of course). If you end up purchasing this, I'm sure you can find a good deal on extra batteries too. They shouldn't be too expensive.
Maybe not the greatest for video but stills should be good for about a 16x20 print. I have a Lumix G5, mostly the same camera with a bigger grip and HDR.
Title is nonsense, the Camera doesn't know how old it is and will work the same as it did from day one....A good camera is a good camera but in the hands of a bad photographer it isn't....Honestly more YT garbage for links....
I don't remember what I said in the video to be honest. I wanted to express that it wasn't to my liking/standards. If I came across saying that it wasn't good and you shouldn't buy it, I apologize for making it sound that way.
I use the Panasonic lumix G3 as my main camera 📷 I've always been impressed with the images it produces for the price, I paid just £45.😊 I think for video, especially vlogging, it needs a hand held gimbal.
I bought a used Q10 with 02 lens in 2016, since then I have accumulated a Q, two Q10s and a Q7. An 01 lens, four 02s, an 03, 05 and two 06s. Four chargers, two ever ready cases, two remote shutter releases and twelve batteries. To date I've spent less than £600 including shipping and import taxes (most have come from Japan). What else could you buy for so little that gives so much fun. Pentax did make an even smaller film SLR, running 110 film cartridges. The lenses can be fitted to the Q using a readily available adaptor.
That's awesome! I bought my wife a Q10 for Christmas and she loves it. They really are fun cameras to use. We had a blast shooting with them in Tokyo last week. I just wish the batteries lasted a little longer.
you should look at the pentax auto 110 lolol, but still awesome video
Thank you for the comment and recommendation. 👍
boring review 🤨
Sorry to disappoint. 🙇♂️
@@imseeno i wish if it was macro shot sample , film stimulation , sample black and white , in depth review .
I think it’s because it was just you talking and waving the camera around awkwardly for 10 min, then a few seconds of sample images. I’m of the opinion that product reviews should showcase the thing being reviewed, not the person presenting the content. But you know… RUclips.

Primera vez que veo basura en el suelo en un video de Japón
I love my X100f...but it's not really even Coat pocketable...I love my F, but it's not the camera to end all cameras for me.
I totally agree that a small, rangefinder style w/a little zoom is missing from Fuji's lineup.
Underappreciated gem. It's my go to street & travel camera. Amazingly small and light, fully articulating touch screen, decent EVG, decent AF, 16MP and dirt cheap nowadays.
Hello po. It comopatible sa software na xwebcam?
According to the Fujifilm website, none of the X-A cameras are compatible with Fuji X Webcam.
I just bought one for 120€ shipped and I also got a Canon Powershot S110 for 45€ shipped… I don‘t think I need 2 similar sized cameras so let‘s see which one I keep 🤔
I got one around the same time this video was posted. I bought a grip for mine. It's amazing for how much I paid for it, but I would be much happier if it had another dial aside from the menu wheel. I bought an EVF for it and I use the camera more than any other one that I have, even my newest and most expensive one. I love the colors and contrast in my images. It's a little higher on the red out of the camera than my others, but images look great like that. I never feel like I have to adjust anything in dev software.
That's great! Which version EVF do you have for it?
@@imseeno VF-3, I hear that the VF-2 is better, but the VF-3 is great for me. Got it new in box for about $100. More expensive than the body.
More PIxels only means Bigger Prints or in Video a larger screen and the distance from that SCREEN. If youre sitting closer than 7-8 feet with a 4k TV your will not notice the differencef rom 1080P. More pixels allows you go to a larger screen or bigggger print. Why shooting 4'5k is for movie screens. Also the printer or the TV/Monitor are all different in how they reproduce. . a G3 camera is perfectly fine for shooting HD Video, and you can uprez now easily if you want for home viewing on big screens. Peoples eyesight is different in many ways.. I have professional experience at the highest levels. Lighting and framing and camera movement and moving the camera,...are the most important. If I gave you a kodak box camera with film and the same to Ansel Adams. Who will bring back the best photo, 4k 5k now have some better color reproduction. However color is subjective. to people. FEMALES see color differently than males. They see more shades. THey are the best colorists. Every see a woman hold up dresses cloth and they look the same to you. Well not to her.
You're absolutely right. In capable hands, any camera can produce amazing results. And it's like you said, people see things differently. I suppose my opinion is more towards beginners/amateur hobbyists such as myself, not towards experts/professionals. Beginners and amateurs might not have the knowledge or resources to make the similar quality of work as you or others of your level.
Given it's 300-400 on ebay I'd say it's no secret
It's hard to believe the price jump since I've bought it. Not sure about outside of Japan, but it's increased about 15000 yen. It's insane.
What about the x20? A lovely little gem
Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to get my hands on one yet. I'd like to though if I can find a good deal on one. But practically every Fuji camera right now is ridiculously expensive.
Got it used at a camera shop in Osaka in 2019.. lugged it around Osaka-Kyoto for 2 weeks, still with me even now Hope to take it back when I planned to go back to Japan in the near future
6:26 I love the 02 lens and Q7 or QS1 combination. I've got all 4 cameras and all 8 lenses in the Q system, but the 02 and Q7/QS1 gets used the most, by far. A very underrated lens, IMO. Really enjoyed your vid and I hope you enjoy your Q as much as I do mine. Best wishes from Yokohama.
Thank you for the comment! Why do like those other cameras? I was thinking of buying one of the other models for my wife if I could find a good deal.
I purchased an E-PL3 and cannot find the setting in the menus to unlock the wheel in the back of the camera. Can you please help??
Menu -> Custom menu (Gear icon) -> Button/Dial (Menu B) -> Dial Lock (At the bottom)
Haha I remember looking into this one back then. The Samsung NX mini was a tiny interchangeable lens camera.
Have you used the Samsung NX? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
Yes but the kit lens broke and malfunction real easy. Weird place for a battery too. Waiting to buy a adapter. Fun while it lasted
Excellent vid! I just got my Q-S1 the other day. It's kinda quirky but for some reason I really love it. Which mode did you find yourself using most of the time?
Thank you! I think I was shooting aperture priority with the "vibrant" or "monochrome" settings.
Nice video. I think the Lumix GM1 is smaller
I just looked up the specs of both on DP Review. You're right. The GM1 is about 2mm smaller both height and width. Now I'm going to keep an eye out for a nice GM1 deal. I really like smaller cameras so thank you for adding it to my list.
@@imseeno yup, great camera, but has a cult following so the prices may be inflated. It has a much larger MFT sensor as well in comparison to the Pentax Q, and paired with some excellent pancake lenses from Panasonic like the 12-32mm, 14mm f2.5 and 20mm f1.7, it's hard to best the image quality for the size. Also consider the GM5, which is only slightly larger, but still the smallest interchangeable lens camera with an EVF.
I love these old tiny cameras! Super fun to just walk around with and not worry about gear
I agree 100%!
It looks to be the size of my Nikon 1 J1. I love these tiny cameras for street photography.
That's another camera I've been wanting to get. How are you liking it?
@@imseeno, I managed to get a white model with 10-30mm at a good price, loved it, then bought the 30-110mm, 10mm, and 18.5mm matching lenses, making it almost a serious system! Like with my Fuji X-M1, I dug into the color settings and have a wonderful muted colors mode, and the B&W produces some nice SOOC JPEGs. I don't quite have the depth of settings like the Fuji, but it is a fun camera. And since it is white, people, take it less serious, and don't really notice it.
That sounds awesome! I'll definitely keep an eye out for a deal on one. Thanks for the input.
yeah, also wanting to try one of those! there is some useful improvements in the later models but i forgot what it was 😜
@@knwohwo9737, if I can find a good deal on the J5, I plan on adding it to my collection.
it does shoot raw 💯 (edit: only q7/q-s1)
I'm aware of it being able to shoot raw+ in the standard mode, but when I turn the dial to change it to one of the "smart effects", it changes the file format to jpeg. And when I go to the menu to try to change that, the file format option is locked. So if you can shoot raw when using the smart effects, can you tell me how change them?
@@imseeno oho, i just checked on my q7 and q10. there is no problem shooting raw using any of the smart effects on the q7! however it seems this is not possible with the q/q10. even with the latest firmware i could not get the q10 to allow raw shooting using smart effects :(
Ah I see. After you commented, I started to mess around with the Q thinking that I made a mistake. Thanks for clearing that up.
I owned Pentax Q10 and Pentax Q cameras, I regret selling both, specially the Q10. Fun camera to use.
Since you've owned both, are there any noticeable differences between the two?
In terms of handling, I like the Q10 better it's faster and has slightly bigger sensor. The original has has metal body, the Q10 is hard plastic but they are equally good in terms of build quality in my opinion. @@imseeno
@@IndieKomiksPodcast thanks for the info!

I have an Olympus EPL2. It is a very fiddley camera. I cannot use the wheel on the back of the camera at all when I take a photo. Only pressing the wheel will work. But I do not have to press multiple times. I just keep the wheel pressed and the camera cycles through the f-stops or shutter speeds for me. I do have a strange problem and I am wondering if you ever ran into it. When I play back my photos, not all of them show up. They do on the computer, just not on the camera. Ever run inte this problem?? Thanks.
That is an interesting problem. How many photos are you able to look at? Maybe there is just some kind of weird limit of how many recent photos you can look at. Or maybe it is just some error due to the age of the camera. I have never encountered that problem when playing back the photos on the EPL3.
@@imseeno I have more information. It seems that this happens after I have edited some of the Jpegs in camera. After about ten I can only see the ones that I have edited. Interesting, huh?
